I wanted to create an extension that does Screen Capture, Annotations plus some way of organizing them. The 1st 2 features are actually readily available out there. But they deal with images only and not the organization part. They also don’t allow other users to comment etc. I wonder if I should continue with this idea for this module … Below are the similar addons. Link to previous post (the idea)
Great, but for webpages not images, so like highlighting text etc. Even with social capabilities. Alittle cluttered and slow when I used it sometime back. Perhaps I can solve these issues by a local version that optionally syncs to remote server
Very nice simple app that works for me too. Its probably just lacking in the social networking part.
Does this mean a dead end for my project idea? Hmm, maybe I need to look for another idea? Or since I am Year 1 still, should I drop this module for now and take it another semester? One concern bothering me these few days is load. Considering I’m new to University, though with Poly/Programming background, should I see what results I get for Sem 1 before taking this module? Currently I have 5 modules (after successful appeal)
Sometime back, I recieved an email regarding a module offered “CP3108B - Mozilla (Independent Work)”. I instantly felt like thats the module for me. Many “normal” modules felt too accademic (lacks practicality) to me. Here I will learn more practical skills like working on an Open Source project (Mozilla Firefox for me), developing extensions to entend its functionality. I will also be documenting my progress here (tagged mozilla), and be on IRC to help other developers in need. Not such a great IRC fan yet though, but will see how it will turn out. It feels like obselete technology by now.
I decided to work on a Screen Capture/Inspiration Gallery/Annotations type extension for Web Developers/Designers (but I imagine others can find it useful too). I am currently working on my Project Proposal also weighting the pros & cons of using JetPack vs XUL. I prefer to use the latest technology (JetPack), but I read XUL is more powerful … also the tutors use XUL I believe and I think if I choose JetPack it maybe harder to get help.
Anyone has any thoughts leave a comment here. Hopefully I can post the draft proposal by tommorow, for your comments :)
Investment uses Custom Post Types/Taxonomy but instead of WordPress default UI for taxonomies, I used a Meta Box to group all custom portfolio meta and taxonomies together. This way, I can use jQuery UI’s multi-value auto complete too.
Design wise, I was quite pleased with my Post Card like contact forms. The social media icons where done my me too. The services page looks great, but the 3D are work are not mine, they are gotten from GraphicRiver.
This was one of my first WordPress site (just learning WP for ~1 month then) that I think was more well done. It uses Custom Post Types/Taxonomies/Meta Boxes for Portfolio. For the Contact forms, its implemented using PHP/functions.php with admin pages for viewing form submissions stored in the database.
Design part, considering myself more of a developer, I was quite pleased with myself. Some highlights were the 4 artworks for the services section in the home page, the “paper-style” form and those squigly underline (in banner) & handdrawn arrows (mainnav)
Hi Jiew Meng,
I'm using the modern1 theme and I love it. Is it possible to implement facebook comments/likes? If you could help me out that would be great.
Also i'm not sure why the likes are not working for me?
Thanks for a great theme.
Yes its possible to implement FB comments & likes. But you will need basic knowledge of HTML.
Hi Jiew! Thank you so much for creating all these wonderful themes! I'm new to Tumblr and am loving how my blogs and reblogged stuff looks on the Comic5 theme! http://thebuzzrealm.tumblr.com/ :D
My question is about the Likes button. When I click on it, it takes me to a page that says "Not Found. The URL you requested could not be found." Anyway to fix that?
If not, no worries. I'm lovin' the fact that you and others that have the web-making background create all of these wonderful themes on your free time for us to plug-in and enjoy. Take care and hope to hear from you! :D
I'm using you theme Comic, how can i activate the facebook and twitter icons? They appear in the css code, but not in the web design, thankx!
You can enable Twitter in the Appearance tab > Twitter name. I dont think I added Facebook, for some reason. Since you have knowledge of CSS, you can add Facebook support easily … just learn from the current code, search “twitter”.
On approx line 29
<meta name="text:Twitter name" content="" />
This adds a “Text Param” called “Twitter name” under your Appearance tab.
Hi. I like your Modern1 theme very much. However, I can get the disqus icon to appear on the page, even though I already add the shortname in the appearance tab. Your Comic themes let the disqus icon appear, but this does not seem to be the case in Modern1. Is there a secret code I need to add? Thank you.
No secret codes :) I just tried in a spare test blog, Sometimes, if the internet connection is no good, the JS may not load causing Disqus not to load too
Hello, I'm currently using the Comic5 theme and I love it so much! Thanks for creating it but I have one problem. When you post or reblog an audio post, the album cover doesn't show on my page; It only shows on the dash. Is there any way so that the album cover shows up on the page and not just only the music bar? thanks :)
when I created it, I didn’t really do that part as I felt that I wont use it. To add it, u will probably need to know some HTML and refer to the Tumblr Theme Docs
Hi there, I'm new to Tumblr and working with your Comic5 theme (thank you very much for creating it!)... I just wondered if you might be able to tell me - in the preview page it shows the authors name, and there are notes (comments) associated with each post. I want to be able to display both of these things but can't see how... In the Tumblr 'community' menu, it allows for replies from people that you follow/have been following you for a length of time but surely there is a way of enabling comments/replies from all?
You help is much appreciated/thanks again,
So far I dont know of a way to open Tumblr’s notes/comments to all. I too find it confusing, Its probably a better idea to just use Disqus
I just Comic5 for my tumblr theme http://bellabellini.tumblr.com
I love it but I'd my my own links to be above the first block of links that include the 'ask me anything' and 'rss'. It would also be great if the side bar had a fixed position menu so you could see the links on the side bar even when you are scrolling right to the bottom.
I know some CSS. Can I add things like that in the advanced section or do I need the whole CSS file
/* if you dont add the below, when scrolling, the sidebar will overlap the masthead */
But theres still the problem of the sidebar cut off when the user has a small screen (height)
I've got one of your themes installed for sfwinechef.com but seem to be having problems with the "Likes" and was wondering if you'll be adding anymore features to the theme?
What is the problems with likes? It appears fine in the Tumblr Preview. Also, I am quite busy with work these days. And also would like to focus more on WordPress as a CMS/Blog platform. I may develop for Tumblr once in a while perhaps when I have some inspiration
Jiew Meng - Awesome themes. I went with Ccomic5 for an online portfolio Im making. I like all your Gundam posts too. I'd never worked with programming languages before but your themes inspired me to give it a try. Check out what I've done so far: http://caseycwilliams.tumblr.com/
I just wish my portrait could be high-res. I feel like I've searched everything. Any ideas?
Keep up the hard work! Thank you
Thanks for the compliments.
When you say portrait, what do you refer to? If you mean photo posts, you can refer to the docs
You could do something like
to output the highres photo, but I dont see a way immediately how I can hide the default if theres a high res version
It’s a testament to the passion developers and designers feel for Tumblr that so many great themes exist – despite the complete lack of tools. No matter how you tackle it, developing a theme involves a time-consuming mess of manual copying and pasting, saving, testing, and copying and pasting again.
TumblrThemr solves this problem,
letting you develop navigable themes locally using real data from your Tumblr blog.
How it works
You install our special Tumblr theme that outputs your blog’s data into machine-friendly XML.
We have a web service which converts and escapes that XML into a JSON data source for client-side templating.
We interpret your custom tumblr file and render it using your data.
Then we hijack your theme’s links to reload different pages locally.
I love your themes! They're awesome :D
Are you planning to make more?
Currently, I am busy with work, I am thinking to focus more on WordPress theme/plugin development tho. I think currently, Tumblr needs to improve its up time and support. Currently, sometimes when I want to ask a question there isn’t a support/community forum. When I contact Tumblr Support, I don’t get replies sometimes.
That said, I like Tumblr for its simplicity. I think there is alot of potential since Tumblr got investors investing in it. Its also expanding.
In short, I think I won’t be developing for Tumblr much for now
